Materiality Exploration

For me, materiality comes at the base of design. How a material functions contributes both symbolic and physical properties. I investigate possibilities in design through materiality exploration. These are my experiments.

Magnetic Cloth

Utilizing linear exchange through double block weave, on an 8 - harness floor loom I wove magnets into the cloth allowing for the cloth to be manipulated and interact with itself and with objects. The cloth is made of linen entirely and uses spot dyed warp to produce a speckled pattern affect.

Memory Weaving

Experimental “memory weaving” was crafted by weaving wire and acrylic weft with cotton warp. The material can offer endless possibilities for manipulated forms and hold shape (memory). Woven on a TC2 loom.

Skin and Skeleton

Exploring bodily form and materials that can resemble skin, I developed sculptures that utilize wood reed as a skeletal form, encased in hog intestines as a skin membrane.

Orange Bio Leather

Fascinated with developing a biomaterial made from orange peel waste, I produced a bio leather. The process involved dehydrating orange peels and producing a powder by grinding them up. I then mixed the orang peel powder with sodium alginate and three other ingredients to develop a small (orange) leather card holder as a trial experimentation.

Dye Sublimation

Collected leaves, something that falls and disappears with the seasons. I dye sublimated my hometown’s gang graffiti onto the leaves. A commentary for gentrification and displacement.
